Extended Your 1040? Here is Why You May Still Get a CP59SN IRS Notice

If you’ve recently found a CP59SN letter from the IRS in your mailbox, don’t panic. This notice simply states that the IRS has not yet received your 2024 Form 1040 personal tax return.

For many taxpayers, this is nothing more than an automated reminder.

Why You May Have Received This Letter

The CP59SN notice is automatically generated when the IRS has no record of a filed tax return. However, if your return was placed on extension, this letter can be disregarded for now. The IRS system does not always recognize that your filing deadline has been officially extended.

Extended Filing Deadline: October 15, 2025

If you filed an extension or an extension was filed for you, then your personal tax return is not due until Wednesday, October 15, 2025. If your return is submitted by that date, it will be considered timely filed, and no additional response to the CP59SN letter is required.

When to Take Action

If your return was not extended or you’re unsure of your current filing status, checking in with your tax professional is a good idea. Also, if you have outstanding documents you still need to submit for your return to be completed, now is a great time to send those in.
